What you need to know about editing . . .
I am a classically trained, experienced, and professional editor with more than 30 years’ experience, among my many other skills and talents. Now, an experienced, competent editor knows the difference between storytelling and writing. Let me explain. Storytelling is the process of telling a story in a clear, concise, compelling and entertaining manner. Spelling, grammar, punctuation, voice, tense, and so on are the actual nuts and bolts of writing, which translates into reading.
Imagine for a moment, you are sitting in crowded subway station. You have a captive audience, so you begin to spin a tale. Everyone is captivated and hangs on your every word, because there is no spelling, or punctuation to distract your listeners. Instead, you pause in all the right places and masterfully use inflections and accents to add depth to your tale. However, you don’t have that luxury on a piece of paper, everything must be spelled out. Clearly, this is the difference between reading and listening, writing and storytelling.
So, as an editor I first look for evidence of storytelling. If the storytelling is missing, or it is done so poorly, then it won’t matter if the writing skills are perfect. On the other hand, if I see excellent storytelling but see the worst writing skills, then I am still likely to suggest publishing, because a book publisher can sell excellent storytelling, but nobody buys a book just because the writing elements are perfect.
The publication world is not perfect, nor is it consistent. Every book publisher uses a different style guide, the rules by which they edit and print books. So, if you have your heart set on being published by a specific book publisher, then you need to be the best storyteller they have ever seen and use that publisher’s style guide in your writing style.
Industrial Documents has helped individuals and companies navigate through the writing, editing, publishing, and management processes for more than 30 years.
